Cadillac-sur-Garonne , Meetings with local stakeholders

Recognized as the most welcoming port of call during the Gironde stage of Mon Tour de France des Escales, Cadillac-sur-Garonne has in recent weeks benefited from the assessment offered by AF Fluvial Conseil.

It was a new opportunity to return to the field, deepen discussions, and conduct a comprehensive review of how the port of call operates.

A welcome that reflects true commitment

Once again, the quality of the reception provided by the local teams stood out during this visit.

Availability of stakeholders, transparency in discussions, and a shared willingness to improve, all the ingredients were in place to carry out useful and constructive work.

A panoramic view of the port of call

The assessment reviewed all the dimensions that shape the river cruise experience:

  • services provided to guests and crews,
  • the organization of the welcome,
  • communication and visibility of the offer,
  • routes to visitor sites,
  • connections with shops and local economic stakeholders,
  • local governance and coordination between partners.

This comprehensive approach makes it possible to understand existing strengths and to identify areas for improvement.

An action plan to move forward

At the end of the assignment, a tailored action plan was delivered to the local authority.

Objective: to provide clear guidance, prioritize key actions, and support the momentum already initiated within the destination.

This work acknowledges local commitment while bringing a structuring external perspective.

A warm welcome … truly exceptional.

Over several days, I travelled across South Gironde to meet local partners.

Everywhere, I found availability, attentive listening, and a genuine willingness to share both ongoing projects and day-to-day realities.

These exchanges confirm that the vitality of river cruising relies above all on the women and men who make it happen.

Le Château Royal de Cazeneuve

There are castles you visit.
And then there is Cazeneuve.

From the moment you arrive, something happens. The calm, the light, the furniture left in place… You don’t feel as if you are entering a frozen monument, but a residence that has crossed the centuries and is still lived in.

A former home of Henry IV of France and Margaret of Valois, the château remains in the hands of the same family. Here, history is not recited — it is shared.

During my visit, the tour was led by Clarisse Fauque. Her delivery was natural, authentic, and deeply respectful of the place. Nothing is reconstructed, nothing exaggerated — and that is precisely what creates that memorable “wow” effect.

Another striking feature is the attention given to accessibility.
The site holds the Tourisme & Handicap label and is equipped with an elevator: an ancient château, yet profoundly open, where everyone can fully enjoy the discovery.

Just 45 minutes from Cadillac-sur-Garonne, Cazeneuve naturally fits within a river cruise call.
An authentic, human, and memorable location.

You leave with a rare feeling: having experienced something real.

📍 In South Gironde, heritage is shared from the heart.

Le Château d’Arche

A glass of Sauternes, the village below, and time begins to slow.

At Château d’Arche, you immediately sense something very special , a natural balance between terroir, history, and a decidedly contemporary energy.

And then there is the view.
You stop, you look, you breathe… and almost instinctively, the pace changes.

Our visit was led by Emma Gayet. Passionate, welcoming, committed , it is clear from her very first words. The way she presents the estate is fluid and lively, never static. You are not simply following a tour; you are invited to discover.

Although officially ranked as a Grand Cru Classé, the château never hides behind its status.
There is talk of precision, patience, and high standards, yet always through an approach that remains accessible, human, and focused on sharing.

Beyond the wine, the emphasis is on transmission, hospitality, and the pleasure of opening the estate to all audiences. Conversations are easy, sincere, and natural.

For river cruises, the site works particularly well:
a remarkable setting, a clear narrative, and an experience that appeals as much to connoisseurs as to curious visitors.

You leave with a smile, carrying the feeling of having lived a moment that is elegant, vibrant, and deeply rooted in its territory.

📍 In Sauternes, modernity and terroir move forward together.

Château de Malle

There are places steeped in history.
And then there are those where you feel history is still being written.

At Château de Malle, that impression is immediate.

Perhaps because the estate has recently changed hands.
But above all because the people who live and work here are already projecting so much into its future.

Acquired in 2024, the château is opening a new chapter, driven by an energy that respects the past while clearly looking ahead.

We were welcomed by Clémence Planty.
The reception was simple, sincere, and very personal. You do not sense a rehearsed speech, but a relationship being built with the place — understanding, transmitting, and bringing the estate to life with accuracy and care.

A Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes, Château de Malle impresses with its heritage, its gardens, and its vineyard.
Yet what stands out most is the feeling of being at a pivotal moment, when everything feels possible.

Discussions are open, practical, and natural.
We talk about wine, visitors, the future, and what the estate hopes guests will feel when they pass through the gates tomorrow.

For river cruises, this is exactly the kind of place that creates attachment:
refined elegance, a powerful story, and deeply committed people.

You leave with one strong conviction: Château de Malle is writing a new page, and it is one worth following.

📍 In South Gironde, some heritage sites are reinventing themselves with purpose and sincerity.

Château de Roquetaillade

Château de Roquetaillade makes an impression from the road.
A powerful, almost severe silhouette , a true medieval fortress.

You expect something austere, highly formal.
And yet the surprise comes very quickly.

The château has belonged to the same family for centuries. Its members still live here and personally conduct the tours. Roquetaillade is not a backdrop; it is a home.

We were welcomed by Jean de Baritault, over coffee, in the family kitchen.
From that moment, everything changes. You are no longer simply entering a monument, but a living place shaped by transmission.

Then come the interiors redesigned by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, colours, details, decorative richness. The contrast with the exterior is striking.

What leaves the strongest impression, however, is the generosity of the family, this way of opening doors without staging anything.

You leave Roquetaillade with one certainty:
you are not even gone yet, and already you know you will return.

📍 In South Gironde, a medieval castle can become a deeply human experience.

Château Toulouse Lautrec

Some places tell the story of an artwork.
Here, you discover a man.

At Château Toulouse-Lautrec, you step into Henri’s private world, the family home, his refuge, his anchor.

The welcome provided by Anne-Louise Vigneau and Audéa Ravineau is immediately warm, attentive, and personal. You feel guided with subtlety and care.

Between the calm of the Gironde countryside and the imagery of Montmartre, the Moulin Rouge, and the Parisian nights, the contrast is powerful. And that is precisely what makes the visit so meaningful.

You gain a deeper understanding of the artist’s path, the balance he sought, and the tensions between withdrawal and creation.

For cruise passengers, this is a compelling call: cultural, accessible, and connected to a global imagination.

You leave with the feeling that you have encountered the artist in a different way — on a profoundly human level.

📍 Here, a territory sheds light on a universal body of work.

Le Château ducal de Cadillac

Massive, structured, dominating the river, the ducal castle immediately asserts its original function: power.

But its history does not end there.

We were welcomed by Olivier du Payrat for a passionate exchange that reveals the full complexity of the site.

Because behind the grandeur lies another reality — that of a women’s prison for nearly a century.

These majestic walls also confined, isolated, and silenced.
This layering of histories gives the monument a particular depth, sometimes unsettling, yet essential.

Even without a complete tour, the château speaks.
Through its volumes, its organization, its presence overlooking the Garonne.

For cruise passengers, this is a different kind of visit, one that encourages reflection and discussion.

You leave Cadillac with the feeling of having encountered a heritage site that questions as much as it impresses.

📍 Here, beauty enters into dialogue with memory.

The shops: the living soul of the destination

Throughout the assessment, it quickly became clear that it is impossible to talk about river hospitality without stepping inside local businesses.

They are the ones who create the first impression, the smile, the memory visitors take home with them.

In South Gironde, the encounters fully lived up to that promise.

Joseph, a cheesemaker, shares his expertise with generosity and pride.
Christine, at Le Boudoir de Rose, embodies the warm proximity that gives town centres their charm.
At La Brasserie de la Halle, the conversation turns to terroir, conviviality, and the pleasure of welcoming guests.

Everywhere, the same desire: to tell the story of the region, to offer a taste, to explain, to pass knowledge on.

These exchanges highlight an essential truth:
river tourism reaches its full potential when it is supported by committed shopkeepers, happy to see visitors arrive and eager to offer them a moment that is simple and genuine.

The South Gironde Tourist Office: the driving force behind the welcome

It would be impossible to conclude this assessment without mentioning those who played an essential role in making it happen.

Throughout the journey, the South Gironde Tourist Office proved to be a valuable anchor point: coordination, connections, availability, and a clear understanding of river cruise challenges.

And then there is Jessica.

In charge of port calls, passionate about the river and convinced of the territory’s potential, she carries this momentum with contagious energy. Thanks to her commitment, doors open, meetings take shape, and dialogue becomes natural.

Her knowledge of the field, her attention to crews as well as visitors, and her ability to connect stakeholders bring real coherence to the development of river hospitality.

Let’s be clear: without this involvement, the assessment would not have had the same depth.

It was thorough, of course.
But above all, it was a genuine moment of shared pleasure.

Thank you for the trust, the support, and the enthusiasm.
